“Some queries related to construction near heritage site were raised. Taking note of it, a new proposal was submitted a month back,” said SPPU Vice-Chancellor, Nitin Karmalkar.

PUNE: After several objections from university associates, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has sent a fresh amended proposal to build a huge convocation hall next to the heritage building (main building) on campus to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Heritage Committee.

Every year SPPU hosts over thousands of graduates on the convocation day, held twice a year. Considering the increasing number of students each year, the varsity has planned to build a permanent convocation hall which can host 3,000 students at a time.

This hall has been planned to be constructed near the SPPU main building, a heritage site.  Currently, the university builds a temporary pandal at the ground next to the main building.

Few of the university associates have objected stating no construction should be done near the heritage site, due to which the foundation laying ceremony that was to be held in February has been postponed further. “Some queries related to construction near heritage site were raised. Taking note of it, a new proposal was submitted a month back,” said SPPU Vice-Chancellor, Nitin Karmalkar.
