PUNE: Post graduation students of the school of energy studies called off their hunger strike, which was held for almost a week, after Savitribai Phule Pune Univerity (SPPU) assured that they will refund their pending stipend, late on Monday.

The students had enrolled for MTech course in 2016. They claimed that according to the admission notice issued during enrollment, they were told that the varsity will be offering a stipend of Rs 12,000 per month. They later learnt after their classes had started that the amount will be received from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) after which they will get it. However, in last two years, the students have not yet received anything, claimed agitated students. Hence, they were sitting on a hunger strike from last five days to demand for their pending stipend amount.

Varsity released an official statement informing that SPPU will take the responsibility of two-year academic fees and examination fees of those students who had taken admission in 2016-17. “Once the university receives the scholarship funds of students from MNRE, the required amount will be deposited in the university’s bank account and remaining amountsferred,” it said.
