“At present, IUCAA is working on its primary and big project ‘LIGO’ which needs a large number of human resource. Therefore, understanding the requirement in this field, we will start this course wherein we are not only focusing on Astrophysics but also Physics. Hence, students will study one year of Astrophysics and one year of Physics. This will widen the employability opportunity for students,” said Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar.

Pune: An array of developments and events at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will be the highlight of 2019. Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar spoke about the forthcoming plans including a new food mall on the campus, courses like Astrobiology and collaborations with IUCAA, C-DAC, IISER etc for the year at the first press meeting of the new year.

New collaboration and courses in SPPU for 2019-20
In collaboration with Inter-University Centre for Astrophysics and Astronomy (IUCAA), SPPU will start a course on Masters in Astrophysics and Physics.

“At present, IUCAA is working on its primary and big project ‘LIGO’ which needs a large number of human resource. These course will have an intake capacity of 25-30 students.”

While, Centre for Development of Advance Computing (C-DAC) will shift to their new building outside the campus, the varsity authorities have requested C-DAC to retain supercomputer PARAM on the campus.

With the help of this supercomputer, it will launch a SPPU C-DAC Centre of Excellence in Data Science. “Data Science is one of the most sought after fields now on the lines of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data.

Therefore, considering this, we will start the courses,” said Karmalkar.
