Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is likely to start a certificate course in yoga, announced Board of Sports and Physical Education Director Deepak Mane on the occasion of International Yoga Day on Wednesday.

The course will commence from August. It will be a three-month course, acted as an additional course to the curriculum. It will incorporate various aspects like medical assistance such as first aid and  human anatomy. The course will be open for students of varsity as well as people outside the university. The fee structure will be framed according to the university policy, which is yet to be confirmed. The students will be able to work as professional yoga trainers after completing course.

"It will be like any other course, in which examination, practicals and theory will be held. Those who are certified in the yoga course can practise professionally outside. This can also be an advantage for students, who can get financial assistance through it," said Mane.

"This initiative is taken in order to spread awareness about yoga. Considering the lifestyle which we are leading at present, it is necessary to practice yoga," added Mane. The university will also soon open a department of yoga, under the school of education.
