SPPU to host space science symposium

Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) and Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) will host the National Space Science Symposium (NSSS), in association with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) from January 29-31.

This is for the second time that SPPU is hosting the event. It first hosted it in December 1983. The symposium happens once in two or three years. It covers all the areas of space science.

P Pradeep Kumar, head of Atmosphere and Space Science Department, SPPU, informed that all topics related to space sciences such as ionosphere, magnetosphere, thermosphere, astrophysics, planetary systems, atmospheric and space sciences, planetary science and explorations, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, middle atmosphere and Sun-Earth interactive phenomenon will be discussed during the symposium. About 500 to 600 delegates from major scientific institutions and universities from across the country are expected to attend this symposium.

The symposium will have presence of important speakers from ISRO as well as other important laboratories like Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, National Atmospheric Research Lab, Gadanki, Andhra Pradesh, Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad, National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune, Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, Space Physics Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.

“This will be a biannual interaction of scientists working in space science. Almost one third of the number of participants come from ISRO. Hence, interaction with them helps other scientists in their fields. Discussion on future directions and programmes under space sciences will help other scientists to know updated trends in space science research and development,” said Kumar.
