PUNE: After seven years, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will be conducting senate elections, the process for which has already begun. The university has opened its window for voter registration of students, who have graduated from the varsity and affiliated colleges, from Monday.
According to the new University Act, 2016, all students, who are already registered in the voter list, will have to register themselves online to be eligible to vote again. So far, there are around 52,000 graduate students registered in voters list.
“Those students, who have their names registered in the voting list, will only have to upload their details online. They won’t be charged any registration fee, whereas, the new students will be charged only Rs 20 as registration fee,” said Registrar of SPPU AD Shaligram.
The senate comprises of representatives from graduated students, principals of affiliated colleges, teachers and various societies running educational institutions in the city. The responsibility of the senate is to give suggestions to the university authorities on improvements that can be made in all areas and domains that are an integral part of the university, namely, academics, research and development, administration and governance, as mentioned in University Act 2016.
“This year, there will be more number of nominated members than elected members as per the new university act. Earlier, nominated members were not included,” said Shaligram.
HOW TO REGISTER
- Only students who have graduated and posses a degree certificate from the varsity are eligible.
- This year, the procedures of election will be held online, therefore, the prospective voters must upload their details online such as passport size photograph, a copy of their signature and graduation degree certificate.
