SPPU English Dept students end stir

The 34 students who boycotted the final examination over alleged improper teaching of a subject, had also demanded resignation of Chatterjee.

PUNE: The agitating students of English Department of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) called off their hunger strike after a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar on Saturday. 

However, Head of Department (HoD) Chandrani Chatterjee requested the varsity to relieve her of her duties as a HOD. 

The 34 students who boycotted the final examination over alleged improper teaching of a subject, had also demanded resignation of Chatterjee. For the time being, the university has appointed Sanjeev Sonawane as acting head of the English Department. Sonawane is the head of Department of Education and Extension. 

The university has clarified that the examination will take place according to its schedule and students who are giving the examinations should follow it as per the schedule. Sonawane has been instructed to implement the necessary solutions in the department under the guidance of Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr NS Umrani. 

SPPU’s English Department was always in bad news from past few months owing to row over PhD interviews and now with 34 students demanding postponement of the final examination over partiality by the teachers.
