Pune: Martyr Saurabh Pharate’s parents have finalised PMC's Late Ramchandra Bankar School for Saurabh's memorial. They gave a letter to Pune Mayor Mukta Tilak to this effect on Tuesday.
Speaking to Sakal Times, Mangal Pharate said, "We have finalised Bankar school for my son's memorial. I have given a letter to Mayor Mukta Tilak. However, a meeting has not taken place as the mayor was busy."
Last week, a meeting between the Mayor, Leader of House, party leaders and local corporators of Hadapsar took place and the PMC asked the parents to choose a spot for the memorial by March 20. The issue of a memorial for Saurabh has been pending for more than a year.
The PMC had given Pharate's parents three options, PMC’s Late Ramchandra Bankar School, Late Vittal Tupe Garden and Aba Tupe E-learning School. Tilak and Leader of House Shrinath Bhimale had given an assurance to start work as soon as possible after passing a proposal in the General Body meeting. The PMC has allotted Rs 50 lakh for the memorial in the budget for 2018-19.
Earlier, previous mayor Prashant Jagtap of the NCP had announced building of Saurabh's memorial in Hadapsar. Local corporators of Hadapsar ward had suggested four places for the memorial, but nothing was done.
Finally, Saurabh’s mother Mangal and father Nandkumar sat on a two-day hunger strike, pressing the administration to take a final call on the memorial issue. After a written assurance from Shrinath Bhimale, the parents called off their hunger strike on March 6, 2018.
