Soon, Pune airport will have local food counters

PUNE: Passengers at Pune airport will soon be able to enjoy a variety of food, as the authority is all set to start Bhel and Vada Pav counters at the check-in areas. Tenders for this have been invited by the authority recently.

Pune airport authorities are looking for private firms to set up a Vada Pav stall and a Bhel Puri counter at the check-in area inside the terminal building.

“Tenders have been invited for it. The Bhel and Vada Pav counters will be opened soon. This will give the fliers a taste of the local food. The counters will be opened at check-in area on the ground floor,” said Pune Airport Director Ajay Kumar.

The number of food outlets and retail shops inside the terminal building has seen a surge in the past year.

However, most of these restaurants do not serve any local snacks. Hence, there was a need to open new counters. The airport has already started a low-cost tea and coffee counter.

However, the move comes after the issue of exorbitant prices of food items and beverages at Pune airport was discussed at a meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee last year.

It was decided that the airport administration should take the initiative to set up a few stalls inside and outside the terminal.

BOOK, GIFT SHOPS TOO
The airport authority is also going to start books, confectionery and gift items store in the arrival area. The fliers can buy books and gifts for their loved ones at the arrival area.

In October last year, the airport authority had started a library to facilitate passengers waiting at the airport to read books for free. The initiative was taken by a city-based NGO Akshar Bharti. The library has around 500 books.
