For some Puneites, getting Aadhaar card is a struggle

Pune: Officials of the district administration claimed that they are yet to receive a response from Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) about various special cases where a person has failed to get an Aadhaar card.

Recently, Sakal Times had highlighted that an advocate from Shivajinagar is running from pillar to post for the last five years to get an Aadhaar card.

The woman, Madhuri Naik (50), applied for Aadhaar at least four times, without success, and is unaware whether her Aadhaar number has been generated or is yet to be generated. Naik claims that she has tried getting in touch with UIDAI through e-mails, but has received no response.

She has been in touch with the district administration department for the last two months but is yet to get her Aadhaar card. Speaking to Sakal Times, an official from the district administration department handling Aadhaar service said that Naik is yet to get Aadhaar, as her biometrics have not been captured properly.

“It is not only Naik but 24 others with similar cases. In all such cases, we have asked UIDAI to provide guidance so that people do not suffer. We sent an e-mail regarding the same on February 6 but have not received any response,” added the official.

Speaking on the use of face recognition for granting Aadhaar by UIDAI, the official said that they are yet to provide Aadhaar to people based on face recognition. Earlier, UIDAI had planned to include face recognition alongside iris scan as a means of verifying the users, helping those who face issues in biometric authentication or have worn-out fingerprints.

With various government and non-government service now requiring Aadhaar authentication, people continue to face problems while availing these services. Similarly, people have been asked by bank authorities, telecom services to link Aadhaar to bank account and SIM card respectively, before March 31.

Recently, District Collector Saurabh Rao said that nearly five per cent of the population of Pune district is yet to get an Aadhaar card and of this five per cent, nearly 4.5 per cent belong to the urban population.
