Socialist leader Bhai Vaidya no more

Pune: Veteran socialist leader Bhai Vaidya (90) passed away at 7.30 pm here on Monday after he was detected with pancreatic cancer.
His son, Dr Abhijeet Vaidya, head of Aryoga Sena, said, “He was unconscious since Monday morning and passed away at 7.30 pm.”

“He was admitted to a private hospital last Monday when he complained of severe stomach pain and was in a critical condition for nearly a week. His body could not respond well to treatment owing to his age,”
Abhijeet added.

Abhijeet added.

An excellent orator and non-partisan leader, his death has caused a dent to the socialist parties. Political leaders across party lines paid their condolences. An extremely studious person, Bhai plunged into the freedom struggle and participated in the ‘Chale Jao’, movement. He joined Rashtra Seva Dal in 1943, and later joined Congress Socialist party in 1946. He also had participated in 1955 Goa Liberation Struggle.

He was in jail for three weeks in 1957 while fighting for Sanyukta Maharashtra movement. He was member of Pune Municipal Corporation from 1967 to 1978 and was Pune city mayor from 1974 to 1975. He was jailed for 19 months during Emergency while he was minister of home for state in Progressive Democratic Front government. He actively participated in various movements including fight for farmers rights, chargesheet against Antulay government, satyagrha, fight against inflation and many other social movements.

He wrote various articles through newspapers. His body will be kept for last darshan at Sane Guruji memorial, Dandekar bridge, and his funeral procession will start at 4 pm while at 6 pm, his body will be taken into the electric crematorium at Vaikunth crematorium,” said his son Abhijeet.
