Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has served show cause notices to six persons for causing encroachment in the river bed near Sangamwadi area. The said persons were found to be dumping debris to create reclamation land for using it for residential and commercial purpose.

The issue was raised by Deputy Mayor Dr Siddharth Dhende. According to him, the reclamation was done for the parking of private tourist buses. He pointed out that since last one month, debris was being dumped 20 to 25 metres away from the compound wall of the river in the 1.5 km stretch along the river bed.

Dhende, on Tuesday, said, “This is leading to narrowing of the river bed and it will cause a flood like situation in the adjacent Patil estate slum areas. The work was being done on the Sangamwadi-Alandi road riverside in the river bed. Hence, I raised the issue.”

One of the senior officials of Building Development and Construction Department of the corporation said, “We have issued notices to six persons for dumping debris in the river bed. After getting a reply to our notice, we will take action against them. We will also remove all debris from the river bed.”
