Pune: In a good news for Puneites, restaurants and shops in Pune are likely to soon remain open round the clock. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday amended the Shops and Establishments Act paving way for establishments to remain open 24x7.
While the move is applicable only for Mumbai as of now, it may soon cover the entire State facilitating traders and restaurants to carry on business all through the night. Shiv Sena’s Aditya Thackeray had initially demanded for keeping establishments open round the clock. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had passed a resolution but the State government struck it down. Later, BJP Mumbai unit president Ashish Shelar and BJP spokesperson Shaina NC moved it again in favour of keeping Mumbai open 24x7. Sources said the move was necessary to ensure that traditional retail outlets could provide competition to the round-the-clock e-commerce websites.
Speaking on the issue, President of Federation of Trade Associations of Pune (FTAP), Fatehchand Ranka said traders in Pune had not made any such demand with the State government. “We have not approached the State government to allow us to keep the shops open round the clock,” he said.
Other traders from the city were not very enthusiastic about the move. “Even though the State government has passed the amendment, it may not be feasible for traders to keep their shutters up throughout the night. There will be issues related to our staff, footfall at shops during the wee hours and others. It may not be profitable, to say the least,” a trader from the city said.
President of Pune Restaurants and Hoteliers Association (PRAHA), Ganesh Shetty, also said they had not approached the State government in the matter. “We had approached the State government to allow us to run restaurants till 2.30 am as movie-goers and others may like to have a midnight snack. But we had not demanded for round-the-clock operations,” he said.
He said if the decision is implemented for Pune as well, restaurants may take a call on the plan of action and take a decision on whether to keep the shutters up throughout the night.
