PUNE: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has decided to serve notice to chicken and meat shops in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Market in Camp to stop ‘live’ slaughtering of animals by August 10.
This was decided at PCB’s General Body Meeting held on Wednesday.
The decision has come after other shop owners and customers complained about it, as it is an eyesore and raises doubts about hygiene in the market.
PCB Vice President Vivek Yadav, said, “There are 19 legal chicken shops and nine illegal chicken shops in the market. Around 100 trucks of hens come to the market and a truck has around 200 hens in it. All these hens are slaughtered in the market itself leading to unhygienic conditions. The solution to this is that the slaughtering should be stopped and it should be carried out at the slaughterhouse situated at Kondhwa.”
General Commandant Chief and PCB President Navneet Kumar, said, “Only frozen chicken will be allowed to be sold at the market. And if this is implemented in a proper way, then the illegal nine chicken shops will be given legal permission to operate.”
The Cantonment market building constructed in 1885 in the Pune Cantonment was to get a structural remake in 2018. However, only some parts of the roof have been replaced and a cold storage room for meat and chicken was constructed which is still not functional.
