Self-proclaimed godman held for molesting woman

Pune: A 42-year-old self-proclaimed godman was arrested for allegedly trying to molest a girl under the pretext of helping to save her mother from black magic. 

The arrested accused was identified as Raju Appa Salve (42), a resident of Ghorpade Peth. The 23-year-old woman approached police on Tuesday. The incident took place between March 5 and 22. 

According to the police, the accused is an electrician and had come to her house to repair a fan. However, he said her mother, who has some mental illness, is a victim of black magic. Later to remove the black magic, he performed some rituals in her house and took Rs 5,500. He took her to Mandhardevi temple and made her read a statement saying that she is his wife. 

“Later he wanted to have physical relations and molested her. The girl suspected him and lodged a complaint,” said Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Mokashi, in-charge of Khadak police station. 

After the complaint, a team led by PSI Sanjay Gaikwad arrested Salve from his house. The police charged the accused with offences under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act. Police Inspector Sambhaji Shirke, who is investigating the case, produced him before the court on Wednesday and he was remanded in police custody till April 1.
