Selected PhD students to get Rs 8,000 stipend every month

In the previous press interaction, Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar had announced that SPPU will provide fellowship to PhD students named after Bharat Ratna JRD Tata.

PUNE: A total of 100 meritorious PhD students will be benefitted by ‘Bharat Ratna JRD Tata fellowship offered by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

These 100 students will be selected from four streams of arts, commerce, science and performing arts. This fellowship is effective from January 1, 2019. Under this, the students will receive a fellowship stipend of Rs 8,000 per month and it will be valid for three years.

According to the rules and regulations of this fellowship scheme, in the beginning, a student will be given a one-year fellowship offer. After the year ends, a review committee will be formed to assess the performance of respective students and accordingly, their fellowship will be extended for the new year.

The regulation also mentions that if a student quits his/her respective PhD programme midway or simultaneously does a part or full-time job, then he/she has to reimburse the given fellowship stipend. Also, those students who are currently beneficiaries of other fellowship facilities will not be eligible for this offer. The student should compulsorily have 75 per cent attendance every month and the attendance will be taken through a biometric system.

The university will strictly scrutinise each fellowship application and based on the quality of applications received, it will select a few students who will get the fellowship offer. “Our purpose is to identify passionate students who are interested in quality research,’’ he had further stated.
