Pune: As there have been several complaints against the inadequate number of chairs for passengers at the Pune airport, authorities have increased the seating capacity at the airport by adding 600 new chairs at the security hold and check-in areas. With this, the total seating capacity has been increased to 2,100 inside the terminal building, said the airport officials. The authorities have also added another 200 trolleys, taking the total tally of trolleys to 700 at the airport.
Ajay Kumar, Director - Pune airport, said, “We have increased the seating capacity by adding 600 chairs at the security hold area and check-in area, with a total capacity of 2,100 seats. We will further add more chairs in June. Beside this, we were having 500 trolleys and now we added 200 more trolleys.”
Passengers at the airport have been complaining about the low number of trolleys and chairs at the airport.
The Pune airport authority had demanded more chairs and trolleys with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) regional headquarters in Mumbai via a letter sent in May, but the demands were ignored.
The Pune airport has a daily footfall of 16,430 and fliers have only 600 chairs. Often passengers have to stand while waiting for their flights. With the ongoing expansion of the terminal building, the daily footfall will increase further. There are about 700 baggage trolleys of which 235 need to be repaired.
Recently, a meeting was held by Anil Shirole, MP, Pune city, and Ajay Kumar, where they assured that there will be a couple of improvements at the airport. At present, the seating capacity of the airport is 650 and we were trying to come up with ways to increase it but facing space constraints. Now, we will be doubling the current capacity and soon the chairs will be increased to 1,500 before March this year.
Many passengers use social media, especially Twitter, for complaints about lack of facilities at the Pune airport. “The airport does not have an adequate number of chairs but the problem tends to get worse especially during late evening hours when flights are quite often delayed. Most people, including women, are forced to stand due to lack of space for sitting. With so many flights taking off and landing in the evening, there should be proper and sufficient sitting arrangements for passengers,” said some of the passengers via tweets.
Speaking about the issues, an official said, “The airport is in the process of increasing facilities for passengers. Many things will come up at the airport.” The airport currently handles around 15,000 passengers daily.
