SC rejects plea filed by Mahametro and PMC

Pune: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the plea filed by Mahametro Rail Corporation and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) challenging the jurisdiction of National Green Tribunal (NGT) to conduct the hearing of a case pertaining to execution of Pune Metro Rail route in Mutha river bed.

The Supreme Court clarified that the arguments in Metro Rail Project case will now proceed before the NGT, Western Zone Bench.

Civic activist Sarang Yadwadkar had approached the NGT seeking a stay on the development of Pune Metro Rail route in Mutha riverbed between Deccan Gymkhana and rear side of Pune district court.

But Mahametro Rail Corporation had approached the Supreme Court challenging the jurisdiction of the NGT over which the Court ordered that the NGT has complete rights to decide its own jurisdiction.

After the matter was referred to the NGT it passed an order that the NGT had full jurisdiction to hear the case and Metro Act cannot supersede the NGT. But the Mahametro again challenged the order in the Supreme Court which was finally rejected by the court on Monday.
