Pune: Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) is now under the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA). Due to this, now, the employees at the government hospital cannot go on a strike for next six months.

Last week, around 800 nurses working at BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital had gone on strike to protest against the transfer of some nurses. Members of the Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation (MGNF) were protesting against the transfer of 10 members from SGH to other medical institutes across the state. The nurses alleged that the transfer of 10 key members of their federation was an attempt to break their unity. They had announced that they will be going on strike from July 4.

In a letter issued by the Secretary of the State government, dated July 6, the technician, nurses and concerned staff employed in connection with the establishment of BJ Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital are engaged in providing the services connected with the maintenance of public health to the public. The government of Maharashtra is satisfied that it is necessary for the public interest to prohibit the strike of the said employees employed in the said essential service by MESMA and the government of Maharashtra hereby prohibits  strikes.
