Sanitation workers put forth demands

Dilip Hathibed, Member of National Commission for Safai Karmacharis (NCSK), has called for setting up an independent committee to solve the issues of sanitation workers. Hathibed was in the city to review problems faced by sanitation workers.

Hathibed said that as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, it is important to look after the needs of sanitation workers. 

As per information given by the district administration officer, Hathibed held a meeting with heads of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations. “The authorities should see to it that welfare schemes for sanitation workers are implemented properly. Similarly, sanitation workers should be equipped with gloves and other paraphernalia required to do their work. There should be a health checkup of sanitation workers every three months. 

These workers should also get benefits of provident fund and should get their salaries on time,” added Hathibed.

He has also called for setting up the committee, which would include heads of various organisations of sanitation workers, heads of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation.

“The committee should meet at least once in every three months,” added Hathibed.

Speaking on the lack of sanitation workers for police stations, Hathibed said that each police station should have its own sanitation workers and a request for the same has been sent at administration level. Hathibed will be visiting Solapur and Satara to understand the needs of sanitation workers and will be conducting a meeting with divisional commissioner soon.
