Sakal’s ex-sports chief Shashikant Bhagwat passes away

Bhagwat, who retired from Sakal as Assistant Editor (Sports) two years ago, is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. He was also a former president of the Pune Union of Working Journalists

Pune: Former Sports Bureau chief of Sakal, Shashikant Bhagwat, passed away early on Monday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 61.

Bhagwat, who retired from Sakal as Assistant Editor (Sports) two years ago, is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. He was also a former president of the Pune Union of Working Journalists.

During his career as sports chief in Sakal, Bhagwat had reported on several national championships across different sports, and the highlight of his career was spot reporting of the 2001 National Games held in four cities of Punjab.

His mortal remains were cremated at the Vaikunth Electric Crematorium, wherein Pune’s Guardian Minister Girish Bapat, Pune MP Anil Shirole, former chairman of the National cricket selection committee, Chandu Borde, and others paid their last respects.

A condolence meeting has been organised on Wednesday, January 10, at the Patrakar Sangh at 10.30 am.
