RTO to conduct permanent driving licence test after 7 pm

Pune: Working professionals who have to take a day off to go for a driving test to procure a permanent licence have a reason to smile, as the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is planning to conduct the test after 7 pm, at the Institute of Driving Training & Research (IDTR), Bhosari.

Regional Transport Officer BI Ajri said, “We recently had a discussion with IDTR officials to start the driving test in the evening. If everything goes smoothly, we will soon implement the plan. Since a majority of the city’s population works during the hours that the test is currently conducted suggestions were made by licence seekers to provide evening slots. But the technological testing equipment needs to be upgraded at the IDTR track before this is implemented.”

“The sensors set up on the track work in daylight. We need the sensors, which can work at night and give better results. We have already started the evening slots for these professionals, which is getting a good response.”

The IDTR track, which comes under the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) at Bhosari, started operations in March 2015 with 400 applicants test driving daily - 250 from Pune RTO and 150 from the Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO. The fee for this test is Rs 320. There are three different shapes of the track, where the ‘8’ shape that is used to check the turning skills of the driver; the ‘H’ shape to determine the reverse driving skills and a gradient track to check if a driver can control a vehicle on a slope. Most of the applicants are newly trained drivers and do not have the experience of driving on such tracks. So, failure is high among the applicants. The computerised system is attached to the sensors, through which an accurate reading of one’s driving skills is ascertained.

The officials of IDTR said that the discussion was fruitful. They are ready to start this facility soon. “We have good technology, which tracks a driver’s movement on the track. But we need high end technology for better results,” they said.

Gaurav Arya, an IT professional, said, “I am planning to buy a new car but I don’t have light motor vehicle (LMV) licence so, I dropped the plan in the past. Every day, I leave my office after 7 pm so I couldn’t go for a test. It will certainly help if I can go for the permanent driving licence test in the evening instead of taking a day off.”
