RTO cancels registration of 42 vehicles

PUNE: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has cancelled registration of 42 vehicles operating as school transport vehicles ferrying children for three months. The action was taken in the month of July. The vehicles violated the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to RTO officials, “During a month-long campaign aimed at identifying violations by school vehicles and vans in July, the action was initiated against 90 vehicles with a fine of Rs 29.46 lakh.”

“During the drive, it was found that private vehicles, including vans, autorickshaws and buses, having no permission from the RTO to operate as school bus yet were plying as school buses. These vehicles did not follow rules and regulations that are prescribed by the RTO. It was a cause of concern and the matter is being looked into by our officials ,” said Deputy RTO Vinod Sagre.

“While many vehicles were found to have no fitness certificates, there were vehicles which had no registration certificates,” he added further.

Primarily, private vehicles operating as school buses with students were overloaded, and had no attendant and also no proper safety measures in place. All these 42 vehicles will see their registrations cancelled for a period of 3 months,” Sagre said.

VEHICLES AUCTIONED
The RTO auctioned 339 vehicles seized during the action taken by the department to check violation of the law. The auction was held on July 30 and 31. The vehicles included motorbikes, three and six-seater auto-rickshaws, private vans, old school buses, private passenger buses, trucks, taxis and others. The RTO earned Rs 1.05 crore in the auction.
