Pune: Pune accorded a grand welcome to the palkhi processions of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj, which arrived here on Sunday afternoon. Citizens offered various services to the warkaris while they were arriving in the city.
The palkhi of Sant Tukaram Maharaj arrived here from Akurdi while Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi arrived from Alandi via Vishrantwadi.
Mayor Mukta Tilak welcomed both the palakhis at Sangamwadi.
The warkaris were chanting bhajans and playing various traditional games while walking on the city roads. The women devotees were also participating in large numbers in the palkhi procession. Thousands of warkaris started arriving in the city in groups since morning and the main palkhis arrived at Sangamwadi at around four 4 pm. Devotees from Pune welcomed the palkhi processions in various ways. Rangolis were painted on different roads.
Various Ganesh mandals and women’s groups offered snacks and tea to the warkaris. Stalls offering free repairs of umbrellas and footwear were opened along the palkhi procession route.
The palkhis passed through the old Mumbai-Pune Road, Shivajinagar, FC Road, Deccan Gymkhana and lastly went through Laxmi Road for a halt at Nana Peth and Bhavani Peth.
As it was Sunday, there were less traffic jams on the roads. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus services were suspended for some time due to the palkhi processions.
