Rotary Club, Robin Hood Army donate food to 15,000 people

Pune: The Rotary Club of Park Street, in association with the Robin Hood Army (RHA) Pune chapter, donated food to 15,000 slum dwellers from Kaspate Vasti and Wakad.

Rotary Club of Park Street President Vijay Matnani said this was their club’s first social initiative after its formation a few weeks ago. It was supported by Sunil Adwani and Rishi Adwani. They plan to establish a food bank soon.

The food donation was part of the RHA’s mega drive to feed one million people across India on Independence Day and to mark its third foundation day.

The RHA Pune chapter serves around 1,000 meals per week. “A normal day for a Robin volunteer is a call from a wedding caterer at around 9.30 pm asking to be ready for an expected surplus and at about 10 pm, we visit the venue and arrange to collect surplus food in our steel containers. These containers are then taken to the railway station and bus stand area, where food is served to street vendors, pavement dwellers and poor,” according to an office-bearer.

RHA Pune also conducts fixed drives on designated days in Pimpri Chinchwad, Aundh, Bibvewadi, Wanawadi and Koregaon Park.

RHA Pune had donated packed drinking water to Latur residents for 60 days during the drought last year.

A blood donation drive was also conducted by RHA for the Sassoon General Hospital Blood Bank collecting 200 bottles of blood for the poor.

RHA will partner with KSB Pumps in their CSR activities related to food, nutrition and education for the poor.
