Pune: The Rajya Sabha Assurance Committee headed by Satish Misra conducted a meeting in the city on Monday to discuss the issues on defence lands in Pune region and instructed the Defence Estate Officer (DEO) of Pune to submit details of defence lands encroached upon in Pune in three months.

The meeting included chief executive officers of the three cantonment boards in Pune, officials from the Ministry of Defence, Army and Navy and members of the committee. According to members of the committee, the DEO has to submit reports to the committee including those of the total area of defence land, area of defence land not in use and area of defence land encroached upon.

The committee further directed the DEO that after the total area and encroached area is calculated, the DEO should either make arrangements to remove the encroachments or give them specific space to build residences. Secondly, if the defence land is empty and is not used for any purpose, then it should be used for public development or transferred to the State government. Similar issues prevail with defence land in Mumbai, north-eastern states and Telangana. They will be also directed in due course of time, members added.
