Rainwater leaks in PMC extension building during VP’s speech
The quality of construction of Pune Municipal Corporation’s extension building comes under the scanner.
Pune: It seems a few minutes of heavy showers on Thursday evening were enough to reveal the quality of work of the new extension building of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Shockingly, the leakage was first noticed when Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s speech was going on. This happened minutes after the building was inaugurated by Naidu on Thursday evening. Rainwater accumulated on the rooftop started leaking near the visitors’ gallery. Civic officials tried their best to downplay the shortcomings in the construction and claimed that it happened as the storm water drain system was choked up.
The construction of this building started after lack of space in the existing corporation building was pointed out. The then ruling coalition, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress took the decision to construct a new extension building in 2015 and NCP Chief Sharad Pawar was present for the bricklaying ceremony of the building.
The total cost of this project was around Rs 50 crore. The PMC had set the deadline of three years. It has completed within the deadline but now, it is coming under scrutiny.
The corporation has given the contract to four contractors for RCC construction, furniture, electrical fitting and dome construction. The dome work was done by Raicon contractor and RCC construction was given to Pandit Kunte.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Nimbalkar said, “Right now, it is difficult to find the reason. We have taken a note of the leakage and we will find out the reason behind the same by tomorrow.”
While speaking to Sakal Times, Shivaji Lanke, Executive Engineer of Building (Bhavan) construction department said, “The leakage was minor. Due to heavy rain, the leakage was reported as storm water drain system was choked up. The leakage stopped after we cleaned the same. We will inspect the work of the extension building. ”
‘Make city clean, green by removing encroachment’
“We have to make the city clean and green. We have to remove encroachment and people should cooperate with the authorities in doing so. Politics should not come in the way of removing encroachment as it is your own city,” said Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday after inaugurating new extension building of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). He pointed out encroachment around the rivers in different parts of the country including Pune.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, City Mayor Mukta Tilak, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, Member of Parliament (MP) Anil Shirole were present on the occasion. Naidu appealed to the elected members and civic officials to develop a new work culture, where getting civic services will be easier for the citizens.
He appealed to people to participate in the governance and also appealed them to raise questions. He shared that it should be done with a positive outlook. “People’s participation is a must. But people will participate only if they get an assurance of quality service,” he added.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Pune city is a growth engine of Maharashtra after Mumbai. We have to make city international. So, we have taken the decision of improving the infrastructure of the city such as metro, transportation hub, ring road and Pune Mahanagar Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) to make the city international. The government has been helping Pune to make it a smart city in the country as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream.”
