Rains quench city’s thirst for next 1 year

PUNE: Following the incessant rains that is lashing the city, the collective storage of all four dams has increased by 2.71 Thousand Million Cubic (TMC) feet in last 24 hours. The total storage of all four dams supplying water to Pune city has increased to 18.10 TMC which will suffices the need of city for the entire year.

According to the Irrigation Department, the total storage of all four dams i.e. Panshet, Khadakwasla, Varasgaon and Temghar on Friday evening was 15.39 TMC or 52.79 per cent. In last 24 hours ended on Saturday evening, the catchment areas of all four dams have received a total rainfall of 808 mm increasing the water level in all four dams to 18.10 TMC or 62.11 per cent.

In last 24 hours, the catchment area of Temghar received highest rainfall of 250 mm while Varasgaon and Panshet received rainfall of 230 mm and 227 mm respectively. However, Khadakwasla dam received only 111 mm of rainfall.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) draws around 1.3 TMC to 1.4 TMC of water every month. Therefore, the total content of 18.10 TMC will suffice the need of Pune city for the entire year. 

However, it is 6.96 TMC less than the last year water level which was 25.06 TMC or 85.97 per cent.

According to an irrigation department official, a total of 2,568 cusecs of water was released on Saturday night and the discharge may increase as per the rainfall. However, India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast heavy rainfall in the city in the next 24 hours.
