Pune: With the onset of monsoon, Puneites have started shopping for rainproof jackets and footwear. For children, parents are busy shopping for school paraphernalia like school bags. Interestingly, bags depicting world maps, globes and other travel-related subjects are currently more popular than those depicting cartoon characters.

When this reporter visited an outlet of Ramesh Dyeing, there were rainproof jackets, footwear, bags and raincoats available in the range of Rs 300 to Rs 3,000. Sanjay Patil, who had come to buy jacket, said, “I prefer buying quality rain wear as even if we are paying Rs 800 for a jacket, it should last for at least 2-3 years.”

As most schools are reopening on June 15, several shops in the city selling uniforms and school bags are flooded with parents and their tiny tots. School bags are available in the range of Rs 150 and to Rs 400. The designs on school bags are dominated by cartoon characters like Doremon, Chhota Bheem, Barbie, Motu Patlu, Ben Ten and Minions and a majority of them are in vibrant colours like red, blue, orange, green and yellow.

Harish Savla of ‘Just Bags’ told Sakal Times, “The choice depends on the class and age of the student. Now, we are seeing something very unique in that bags with cartoons are only liked by children till class three and four. Older children prefer plain and simple bags.”
