Pune station to have multipurpose stalls

Pune: If spending half of your railway journey gets wasted in tweeting to the Railway Ministry about lack of availability of essential items that passengers often need or forget to pack - then things may soon change for good at Pune railway station. Items like napkins, diapers, medicines and milk for children, which are often not available during journeys, will now be available soon at multipurpose stalls at all railway stations. The Railway Board has recently decided to put up these stalls and Pune railway station too will have these non-catering items for passengers.

The Railway Board has issued the circular regarding this. According to the circular, “In order to have a single outlet/stall at platform from where passengers can purchase non-catering items required during the travelling, a new policy on multipurpose stall is necessitated. The objective is to facilitate the passenger to buy items required during the travels under one roof and simultaneously, ensuring decongestion of platforms by optimum utilisation of the available space on stations and platforms.”

Tender process
The railway authorities said that the decision was taken recently, but the announcement of the multipurpose stalls was in Railway Budget 2016-17. “As per the circular, we will soon call tenders for the stall. Multipurpose stall means the stall will have everything (non-catering) like magazines, books, newspapers, medicines and non-pharmacy items, dry/spray milk powder,” said a highly placed official of Pune railway division.

The stall will sell books pertaining to Indian tradition, culture and history. It is mandatory for them (the stall owner) to sell and display prominently the zonal railway time table and trains at a glance and other official publications as may be mandated by the zonal railway or division from time to time.

Platform to be decided “We have not yet decided that which platform will have the multipurpose stall. But soon, Pune will have the stall,” said the official.
