Plans are afoot to discontinue train numbers 71407 and 71408, which are Pune-Daund DEMU locals, because of poor public response.

Pune: Pune Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Milind Deuskar said Rs 725 crore has been sanctioned for passenger amenities by Central Railways.

“We have sent our plans worth Rs 46.7 crore for railway stations in Pune division such as Pimpri, Chinchwad, Shivajinagar, Dehu Road and Akurdi. We are planning to put sanitary napkin vending and disposal machines at stations and DRM offices.

The general manager will decide which projects to approve as other divisions will be sending their plans too,” he said.
“We are planning to discontinue train numbers 71407 and 71408, which are Pune-Daund DEMU locals, because of poor public response,” he added.

About the issue of autorickshaws and allowing Ola-Uber cab pick-up points at stations, Deuskar said, “We need to focus on passengers. If there is demand, there has to be supply. People will prefer a transport that plies by meter. If we have provided autos with a space worth Rs 2 crore for free, they should at least give good service and take passengers to their destinations as per meter rates. But they refuse to do so and that is why most passengers prefer private transport.”
