Pune police present 150 scholarships to students
I want to assure that SPPU will always stand by these unprivileged students and also organise two days’ career guidance programme for all of them
Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Vice Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar and Police Commissioner Rashmi Shukla on Thursday handed over study materials and scholarships to 150 meritorious children from economically weaker sections of the society.
Every year Pune city police department awards these scholarships through its Vighnaharta Trust.
“With this activity, we have seen another side of Pune police department.
“I want to assure that SPPU will always stand by these unprivileged students and also organise two days’ career guidance programme for all of them,” Karmalkar said.
Every year 50 students of Class VIII from economically weaker sections of the society are adopted by the police, who look after their educational needs till they pass out of Class X.
Pune Police Commissioner Rashmi Shukla said, “Education is the most potent weapon.
“So, study hard not just to score good marks but also to gain knowledge. We are always with you for all your academic needs. Pune police will continue to shoulder all the responsibility of the selected children.”
Many students, speaking on the occasion, thanked the police depatment for supporting them and standing by them, without which they would have dropped out of school long ago. “The trust was established in the year 2000 and since then, we have supported over 1,000 students. Many of them have become professionals in fields such as engineering and finance,” said a police official.
