Pune: Ganesh mandals in the city have been conveying messages on social issues and causes through their decorations (dekhava) during Ganeshotsav. This year, many mandals have come up with themes like patriotism and farmers’ issues.

The Perugate Chowk Mandal in Sadashiv Peth, which was the first mandal to introduce slide-shows in 1998, has the dekhava on ‘Kahani Kashmir Ki’ (Story of Kashmir).

“Every year, we try to touch the subject that is on everybody’s minds. We started with Kargil in 1998 and have covered subjects like female foeticide, traffic issues, attacks on World Trade Centre, etc. This year, the slide show on Kashmir includes photographs and information regarding the history of Kashmir, the recent Amarnath terror attack, the threat of terrorism in the state, etc,” said Satish Sane of Perugate Chowk Mitra Mandal.

The Sakhalipeer Talim Mandal in Nana Peth, a mandal famous for its socially relevant dekhavas, has a decoration on the issue of farmers’ suicides. Giving details about the decoration, Bhai Katre of the mandal said, “Our theme for the year is ‘Shetkaryanche Kaivari, Shivajiraje’ (Shivaji, the guardian of farmers). We have shown how Shivaji Maharaj resolved problems of farmers. Also, we have made a commentary on how the government today has failed to find a solution on farmers’ suicides.”

Grahak Peth near SP College, a departmental store that makes Ganesh decorations from biscuit packets, is giving a message of boycotting Chinese goods. “We have created a map of India with biscuit packets, where different regions are marked with packets of different types of biscuits. And we have a soldier, who is giving out the message of boycotting Chinese goods to the Indians,” Suryakant Pathak of the Grahak Peth Mandal said.

Surgical strikes and water conservation were among the many other issues reflected by Ganesh mandals in the city this year.
