PUNE: The Pune International Airport will increase its capacity from October 28. It will see 30 new flights in the winter schedule and so the airport authority will increase the number of parking bays. At present, there are eight bays for aircraft, which will go up to 13.
Ajay Kumar, Director, Pune Airport, told Sakal Times, “We are going to increase the capacity of flights from the winter schedule. Overall, 30 new flights will depart from Pune to different parts of the country within six to eight months. We have been working to increase the number of parking bays at the facility. With the winter schedule starting from October 28, the new parking bays will be available taking their number to 13. This will provide an opportunity for more flights.”
The number of daily flights has now touched 200 per day from 158 last year. At this rate, the airport is expected to cross 10 million passenger mark per annum in the ongoing year. In 2017-18 fiscal, the airport had recorded a passenger growth of 20.6 per cent. “When the flight starts from the airport, there is need of parking of aircraft. The airport is in expansion mode. An aerobridge, in addition to the additional parking bays, is among the most important projects for us,” Kumar said.
The Pune airport authority is also working on increasing the aerobridges. The aerobridge project has been taken up on a priority basis and the design of the three structures has been finalised. “More aerobridges are needed. We have already started working on it. By December end, there will be three new aerobridges at the airport. All the three bridges will be set up at the facility within the next two months. They will get operational from December onwards,” said Kumar.
