Pune gets 6 per cent more rainfall in July this monsoon

Pune: Pune has received 6 per cent more rainfall than expected this monsoon from July 1 till July 31. Even as the rainfall across Maharashtra has been good, regions like Marathwada and Vidarbha are yet to get their share.

Pune has reported 195 mm rainfall, more than expected rainfall of 184 mm in July, according to the statistics provided by Pune-based India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Pune has reported 195 mm rainfall, more than expected rainfall of 184 mm in July, according to the statistics provided by Pune-based India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Marathwada has been facing a drought like situation from past four years. Many farmers were relived after receiving good rainfall last year. However, so far with most places going dry, the situation in these parts looks grim.

State scenario
According to the statistics available with the IMD, the rainfall received by Marathwada and Vidarbha has been less compared to last year.

“From June 1 to July 31, Marathwada has received 265 mm rainfall so far which is less by 20 per cent. Last year, during the same period, Marathwada had received 433.4 mm of rainfall which was more by 10 per cent,” said an IMD official.

The condition in Vidarbha is also not different with the region receiving only 399.9 mm rainfall since June this year. Officials said that this is less by 17 per cent. Last year from June 1 to July 31, Vidarbha had received 655.7 mm rainfall with 490.2 mm received in July alone.

Affected agriculture
Lack of rainfall has been especially affecting the agriculture in these regions with farmers praying for rain each day. Apart from Marathwada and Vidarbha which have so far received less rainfall, Central Maharashtra which had last year received 420.3 mm rainfall in June and July has this year already received 471.6 mm rainfall which is more by 22 per cent.

Rainfall in Pune
Between June 1 and July 31, Pune has received 402 mm rainfall as against 278.1 mm received during the same period last year.

The details available on the IMD website reveal that this year from June 1 to July 31, the cumulative rainfalls received by the city is more by 69 per cent making it fall under the large excess rainfall category.

Officials from IMD said that this year, the rainfall has been especially good in June. “The city has received 207.8 mm rainfall this June, which is153 mm more compared to last year. During June last year, the city had received just 54.8 mm rainfall,” said an IMD official. The officials further said that the rainfall received in June this year is 70.1 mm more than the normal expected rainfall.

“Pune has received 195 mm rainfall in July which is less than what was received in the same month last year. Last July, the city had received 223.3 mm rainfall which was the fourth highest since 2007,” he said.
