Pune: The Environment Status Report (ESR) for 2016-17 presented by the civic administration in the General Body (GB) of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), is more or less same as the ESR for 2015-16. Even instead of chalking out a plan to curb pollution and how various initiatives can be taken for environmental conservation in the city when the green cover of the city is fast vanishing, the ESR mostly dwelt upon information provided by various departments of the PMC.

The ESR dwelt upon five parameters which are driving forces, pressure on the environment, status, impacts and responses. But in most of the parts, the ESR states information like land use, types of trees in city, the population of the city etc.

However, according to the ESR, the number of private vehicles in Pune has gone up. Similarly, the number of air passengers has also increased.

The number of air travellers has gone up from 15,066 per day in 2015-16 to 17,441 during 2016-17 but at the same time, the number of passengers travelling by railways and State transport buses has gone down. During 2015-16, total 799.76 lakh commuters travelled by trains while during 2016-17, the number has gone down to 795.36 lakh. At the same time, the number of commuters using State transport buses has gone down from 3.23 lakh per day during 2016-16 to 3.04 lakh in 2016-17.

After the presentation of ESR to Mayor Mukta Tilak, the GB meeting was adjourned till September for discussion and approving it with the suggestions from elected representatives.
