PUNE: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) and city Traffic Police have drawn up a plan to start prepaid autorickshaw booths at four locations. The booths will give relief to thousands of passengers who are always being looted by several autorickshaw drivers by not plying by the meter and charging exorbitantly.
To provide s hasslefree ride to passengers, the prepaid booths will be started at Pune Junction, Swargate ST Stand, Shivajinagar ST Stand and station and Sangam bridge. The system will allow people to check the estimated distances and fares to any destination before deciding whether to travel or not.
Vivekanand Wakhare, PI, Planning Traffic Police said, “We have drawn up a plan about how the booth will work. There are three contractors who have shown interest in starting this facility at four places. We are in final talks and whoever fulfils requirements, we will give them an opportunity to run the booth. There will be a traffic police constable at all booths, who will help passengers get an easy ride.”
Pune City Autorickshaw Association President Baba Shinde said the system will be easy and simple. “It is like a prepaid autorickshaw service. There are more than 60,000 autorickshaws in Pune. Many people often complain about the autorickshaw drivers’ rude ways and attitude.”
In January, BI Ajri, RTO, Pune wrote a letter to Pune traffic police to start the prepaid booths at these four places. “We wrote a letter to the traffic police to start the facilities. This will help thousands of passengers get relief from drivers who refuse to ply by the meter. After the success of this project, we will start this facility at some other places,” he said.
