District Guardian Minister Girish Bapat, who was accompanied by other BJP leaders and activists, was present at the event. The BJP stated that GST has brought in a new taxation system in the country, scrapping the old complicated tax regime.

Meanwhile, opposition parties including the Congress which had prepared the GST bill during the Manmohan Singh government, preferred to keep a low profile.

Senior Congress leader Sachin Sawant, who was in the city on Saturday, criticised the government for not making preparations before rolling out the new tax system and pointed out that many state governments have not passed the GST bill and the software system is not ready.

"The rolling out of GST is on similar lines to demonetisation. So, without much preparation, the unnecessary hurry will have the same impact as demonetisation," Sawant said.

He asked why the government left out fuel and liquor from the GST net. When asked whether the Congress will protest against GST, he avoided a direct answer.
