Protest at Shaniwarwada against Peshwas’ reign
A prerna march has begun at Yevale in Nashik on December 23 which will reach Shaniwarwada on December 31.
Pune: Bhima Koregaon Shouryadin Prena Abhiyaan Cultural Committee will take out a huge rally on Shaniwarwada on December 31 to protest against the Peshwa rule and celebrate the 200th year of a battle fought between British and Peshwas. The rally will be held from 2 pm to 8 pm.
In a press conference here, Aakash Sable of Republican Bharat said, “The rally will be inaugurated by late Rohit Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula, followed by a function at Bhima Koregaon where retired Supreme Court Justice PB Sawant would be the chief guest. High Court judge BG Kolse Patil, newly-elected Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mewani, Umar Khalid, tribal women leader Soni Sori would also be attending the event.” Ramesh Gaichore said, “Over 200 organisations have joined hands to celebrate the 200th year of the battle at the same to end to the casteism. A prerna march has begun at Yevale in Nashik on December 23 which will reach Shaniwarwada on December 31.”
Apparently, the jaystambh (plaque or roll of honour) at Koregaon Bhima was constructed by British after they defeated the Peshwas in 1818 for honouring soldiers who fought the war.
Meanwhile, Pune Nagar Hindu Sabha has demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation and Pune police not permit the rally as it intends to spread casteism in society.
