Pune: A professor of the Bharati Vidyapeeth deemed university was arrested by Kothrud police station on Wednesday night for allegedly sexually harassing an Iranian girl student for helping her get admission for PhD.

The accused has been identified as Dr Shivaji Borhade from the department of commerce at Yashwantrao Mohite College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Kothrud.

The 31-year-old woman, who is weak in English, used to record all their conversations and later used to listen to the recordings for better understanding. She has also recorded his demands for sexual favours for admission, police said.

According to police, the victim came to India in December 2016 but could not get admission in Pune University as dates had lapsed. She came in contact with Borhade through another Iranian student. She had met him 7-8 times and he had agreed to become her guide. Whenever she used to present her thesis he used to point out mistakes and asked her to correct them.

“When I met him on August 5, he told me that there is only one seat vacant and there are two students applying for it. He asked me to meet on the afternoon of August 8 and promised to help me get the admission. I went to meet him around 12.30 pm on Tuesday in his room no 10 located on the second floor of the commerce department. He was alone there. He asked me to sit in front of him. While talking about the admission process, he told me that if I want admission I would have to sleep (have sex) with him and while saying this he molested me. He was saying that I am very beautiful and it won’t be a problem in getting the last vacant seat for admission. I refused his offer and fled from there”, the woman stated in her complaint.

Later with the help of her fellow countrymen, she got in touch with their Indian friends who helped her reach Kothrud police station and register the FIR on Wednesday. “The complainant has all the recordings including the last conversation, about 18 minutes of recordings. The police personnel were very helpful and without any delay, they registered the case and got the accused arrested”, said an Indian man, who refused to be identified, saying everybody helped the foreigner woman in distress.

Police have charged the accused Professor Borhade for an offence under sections 354A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code. Police Sub Inspector Payal Chaudhary is further investigating the case.
