Prison dept told to keep details of plantation drive

Pune: The State has asked the Prison Department to maintain details of the saplings planted by it under the massive drive by Maharashtra government to plant 50 crore saplings in three years. 

As per the drive, 4 crore saplings were to be planted in 2017, 13 crore in 2018 and 33 crore in 2019, taking the total to 50 crore over three years. On Thursday, the government released a notification to the Prison Department asking them to include the issue of tree plantation in each of their meetings. 

Pune: The State has asked the Prison Department to maintain details of the saplings planted by it under the massive drive by Maharashtra government to plant 50 crore saplings in three years. 

As per the drive, 4 crore saplings were to be planted in 2017, 13 crore in 2018 and 33 crore in 2019, taking the total to 50 crore over three years. On Thursday, the government released a notification to the Prison Department asking them to include the issue of tree plantation in each of their meetings. 

The notification stated that the department should maintain details of saplings planted, the location, the survival rate and other details. The government also directed the department to raise their issues and concerns in case they are facing hurdles in the plantation drive.

Similarly, senior officials should visit the plantation area to make the activity a success leading to increase in the green cover of the State. The notification stated that the senior officials should also check the operational part of the activity including procurement of saplings. District level committees have been formed under the chairmanship of the district collectors to supervise and implement the tree plantation drive.

Representatives from government departments, NGOs and environment institutes have been appointed to look over the activity for its success.
