Pimpri: The Power Ministry of Government of Maharashtra announced the power policy for the State last week. In this policy, it has made it mandatory for urban local bodies to install LED bulbs for
street lighting.

For the implementation of energy conservation project, Mahaurja is going to give funds up to Rs 50 lakh to municipal corporations and municipal councils across the State.

The policy stated that it will be mandatory for urban local bodies, development authorities, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, zilla parishads and PWDs to use LED bulbs for street lighting. Concerned authorities must use sunlight sensor switches for street lighting so that they will automatically switch off in the morning and switch on in the evening. Urban local bodies having electricity bills more than Rs 25 lakh must conduct an investment-grade energy audit in the next two years by the registered energy audit company.

The compliance of the audit report will be mandatory for the local bodies or development authority. For ensuring the compliance, urban development department, rural development department, water supply and sanitation department must issue orders regarding this.

The urban development department must implement schemes to encourage people to follow green building norms. Exemption in development charges, exemption in property tax and additional floor space index can be granted to people who construct buildings following greenbuilding norms.
