Pune: Throwing light on the condition of the public transport utility in the city, an RTI query has revealed that the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) has not provided sufficient equipment and facilities at all its bus stops.
In its reply to an RTI query, the PMPML authorities stated that 70 bus stops do not have fire extinguishers and first-aid boxes. Besides, only 29 have washrooms, which include 18 run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and 11 by the PMPML.
The RTI application was filed by PMP Pravasi Manch activist Rupesh Kesekar to know about facilities such as drinking water, sanitation, bus schedules, first-aid kits, restrooms for employees and firefighting equipment provided by the public transport body.
A copy of an RTI application and the response sent by the PMPML administration was procured by Sakal Times. Around 11 lakh commuters travel daily by PMPML buses.
Rupesh Kesekar said, “Every day, average 11 lakh passengers commute by PMPML buses. The fire extinguisher is a critical equipment required at all bus stops. The authorities have admitted that none of the halts has a fire extinguisher. This is a serious issue.”
Similarly, washrooms and toilets are essential facilities, which have to be provided at bus halts. Only 29 bus stands fulfill the requirement, of these PMPML has built only 11 while the PMC has set up 18 washrooms. Drinking water is available at only half of the stands (36).
Kesekar had filed the RTI query in March about the facilities provided by the PMPML. He filed the first appeal against the details provided by the PMPML. The authority has given full details about the bus stands in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
