Pollution control board issues notice to PCMC

PIMPRI: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a notice to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to give Rs 5 lakh bank guarantee for taking urgent measures to prevent Pavana river’s pollution.

The notice to give the bank guarantee was issued after dead fish were found in Kejubai bund of Pavana near Thergaon, last month. The MPCB had issued a show cause notice to the municipal corporation on February 27.

MPCB officials had visited the bund area after a large number of dead fish were found there. It was observed that domestic drainage water was released directly into the river at five locations. Drainage water from some broken drainage pipes was also mixed into the river water.

The investigation conducted by the board had revealed that the fish in the river had died due to an inadequate supply of oxygen. The river water is covered with water hyacinth, preventing entry of sunlight into the river.

The MPCB had conducted a hearing in this connection on March 5. MPCB’s regional officer Dilip Khedekar said, “The PCMC officials assured us of taking immediate measures to prevent the release of drainage water into the river. The MPCB has sought Rs 5 lakh bank guarantee for undertaking the required measures.”
