Apart from Section 353 which is punishable with up to five years of imprisonment, the police have also booked the unidentified accused persons for the offence under sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 354D (stalking) of the IPC.

Pune: Fed up with obscene and abusive calls by citizens to police control room (100 number), the Pune city police have started filing cases against such persons for offence under non-bailable Section 353 (obstructing public servant from discharging official duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), apart from relevant charges for abuse and use of obscene language by callers.

On Tuesday, four FIRs were registered with the Bund Garden police station based on complaints by women cops from the main control room at police commissioner’s office, Camp.

The incidents had taken place between September 22 and October 2. All the calls have been recorded.

Apart from Section 353 which is punishable with up to five years of imprisonment, the police have also booked the unidentified accused persons for the offence under sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 354D (stalking) of the IPC.

Sleuths stationed at Pune police control room, which is the first point of contact for people requiring the assistance of police, are at the receiving end this time from unidentified miscreants, who have continued a trail of abusive calls by dialling 100 for a period of over a month.

After years of wait, the Pune police have finally been successful in blocking unwanted calls at the Pune Police Control Room (PCR) by installing the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS).

The police have claimed that the number of calls after installing the IVRS at the PCR has reduced from 25,000 a day to 1,500 a day.

When people call on 100, they are greeted with a Jai Hind message from the police and the callers are asked to dial 1 if they are in need of police help. This makes the caller aware that he has been connected to the PCR.
