The Chatuhshrungi police said that they have detained the accused and not arrested them as they are juveniles. However, Desai’s family has questioned the police’s claim regarding the age of the accused.

PUNE: The Chatuhshrungi police have detained three of the four accused, including prime accused Pranit Nimhan, in the assault case of 21-year-old Symbiosis student Varun Desai. One of the accused is still absconding.

Desai was assaulted by the accused for not giving way to them while they were driving on ITI Road in Aundh on Thursday. Nimhan, who was driving the car, led the assault on Desai, who suffered severe injuries on his face and a broken nose. The police have also seized the car.

The Chatuhshrungi police said that they have detained the accused and not arrested them as they are juveniles. However, Desai’s family has questioned the police’s claim regarding the age of the accused.

Salil Desai, the victim’s father, said, “The police told us that the accused are juveniles. Pranit Nimhan was driving the car and if he is a juvenile, who gave him a licence to drive? We are suspicious about their age and have asked the police to do a proper investigation about their age. They can easily get away by declaring themselves juveniles.”

Dayanand Dhome, Police Inspector, Chatuhshrungi police station, said, “The prime accused is 17-year-old and the other two are also of the same age. We will get hold of the absconding accused soon.” When questioned about Nimhan driving despite his claims of being a juvenile, Dhome said, “We have seized the car and will investigate into the matter.”

The three accused were produced in a juvenile court on Saturday. The court has given their custody to their relatives.
