PMC will hire machines to demolish illegal structures

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to demolish illegal constructions in 11 newly merged villages in municipal areas. The civic body is going to acquire machines like high reach jaw crusher machine and mounted excavator machines, on lease.

The civic body is going to spend Rs 60 lakh to hire the new machines. The Standing Committee approved a proposal of PMC Building Permission and Development Department on Tuesday.

Superintendent Engineer Rajendra Raut said, “Till date, we have demolished four lakh square metres of unauthorised constructions in merged villages and sent notices to many more. There are more than 10 lakh square metre unauthorised constructions in merged villages.”

In 2017, 11 villages on the outskirts of Pune were merged with the PMC. The civic body carried out a survey of merged villages and estimated that more than Rs 2, 000 crore will be needed for developing infrastructure. Earlier, all these villages were in the jurisdiction of Pune Mahanagar Regional Development Authority (PMRDA). Due to lack of machinery and manpower, PMRDA action was limited.

After the merger, unauthorised constructions started mushrooming and people constructed unauthorised multistoried buildings in these villages. The civic body started taking action against unauthorised constructions but due to lack of modern machines, it was not so effective especially against unauthorised multistoried building structures.
