Plastic has been used in more than 80,000 metre of road construction

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already started using plastic in road construction from January 2018. From then, plastic has been used in more than 80,000 metre of road construction (eight per cent of plastic mixed in the tar).

According to Aniruddha Pawaskar, head of the road department of PMC, the contractors have been using plastic in road construction from January 2018. But, it has not been made mandatory for the contractors to use plastic. Pawaskar said, “While constructing any road, we provide the contractor with the particular amount of tar needed to construct the road which has plastic mixed in it.”

He further said, “The tar used for road construction comes from the hot mix plant of PMC situated in Yerawada. And the two main components including Bituminous Concrete and Dense Bitumen Macadam has eight per cent of plastic mixed in it. So most of the plastic was being used even before the plastic ban was announced.”
