Pune: The PMC has slapped a fine of Rs 62 lakh on a contractor for failing to complete the Warje flyover project within the deadline. Warje flyover, connecting Cummins College Chowk to Universal Chowk, was to be inaugurated on February 16. Simplex Infrastructure Company was engaged in the construction of flyover, which was to be completed by October 2016.

In 2012, the PMC had proposed the construction of the flyover to solve traffic congestion near Cummins junction. The corporation allotted the work to Simplex Infrastructure on October 22, 2012. The total length of the flyover is 1.2 km and final cost for this project was Rs 42 crore.

The corporation had set April 2015 as the deadline for the project. Since the required land was unavailable, the deadline was extended till October 2016. However, at the time of the deadline, since the contractor was able to complete only 65 per cent work, the corporation served a legal notice directing the contractor to complete the work by December 2016.

Prashant Waghmare, city engineer of PMC, said, “The contractor did not follow suggestions given by us to expedite the project work. We had also served legal notices to the company.”
