PMC seeks explanation from firm for rank drop

PUNE: The KPMG firm, which was appointed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to improve the Pune city rankings in Swachh Survekshan 2019, gave a presentation before the civic officials on Wednesday. The civic authority had sought an explanation regarding the poor ranking the city got under Clean City Survekshan 2019 conducted by the Central Government.

The firm was given the responsibility to help improve the ranking of the city in the survey by presenting proper documentation before the Union Urban Development Ministry.

While speaking to Sakal Times, Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Nimbalkar said, “The civic body had orally demanded an explanation from the firm regarding the city’s low ranking.”

“The consultancy gave a presentation on Wednesday in the PMC. However, we haven’t reached any conclusion yet. We will have a detailed discussion and then take a decision,” Nimbalkar said.

During last week’s General Body meeting, the opposition parties had criticised the civic body and sought action against the consultant firm. Similarly, civic activists had also demanded action.

The PMC gave Rs 34 lakh to the firm to carry out the work and had said that KPMG was already providing consultancy to the State and other municipal corporations. PMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao had taken a personal interest in making Pune number one in the Swachh Survekshan 2019.
